The May 18 Memorial Culture Center, built on the area of the old Sangmudae Military Base to commemorate the May 18 Democratic Movement, has been a place for sharing experiences and sublimating the historical meaning of the May 18 Democratic Movement. It serves as a representative city central park standing for the image of democracy and human rights city.

When the Sangmudae Military Base yielded as the site for a citizens’ park, the May 18 Liberty Park was created with the restored military court and prisons used after the movement in 1980. The May 18 Memorial Culture Hall and the May 18 Education Hall were established in order to inherit and develop the spirits and traditions of May 18 Domocratic Movement.
